Oba of Benin Urges Nigerians to Shelve August 1 Protest and Allow Economic Reforms
The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, has appealed to Nigerians to suspend the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1. He called on citizens to give the Federal Government more time to deliver its economic reforms and ease the current hardship.
Nigerians to Exercise Patience as Reforms Take Shape
In a public announcement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the palace, Osagbobvo Iguobaro, the monarch referred to the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), held in Abuja on July 22. He acknowledged the growing economic strain but advised Nigerians to show restraint and patience.
The Oba stated that positive change often comes with short-term discomfort. “For things to get better, it has to be rough for a while,” the statement noted. He appealed to organisers of the August 1 protest to shelve their plans. He further urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to implement its economic and security policies to ease the burden on households.
