Benin Traditional Council Rejects Igbo Identity Claims
The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has dismissed claims that the Igbanke people are of Igbo origin. The council described such narratives as false, insisting that Igbanke has always been part of the Benin Kingdom.
In a memo signed by senior palace chiefs, the BTC stressed that the Igbanke community is historically and genetically Benin. It noted that although the people have interacted with neighboring groups in Delta State, their ancestral roots remain tied to Benin.
Benin Traditional Council on Suspended Enigie in Igbanke
The statement also addressed disputes involving suspended Enigie (dukes) in Igbanke. The council accused them of introducing Igbo-style titles such as Obi and Eze into Edo land. It described this as an act of sacrilege and a rejection of Benin authority.
The BTC recalled that under the Bendel State Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, no such titles were recognized in Edo land. It emphasized that all legitimate chieftaincy titles in Igbanke fall under the authority of the Oba of Benin.
Benin Traditional Council Affirms Loyalty of Igbanke
According to the palace, Igbanke people migrated from Benin City in history. They have always been recognized as part of the Benin Kingdom.
The council pointed to long-standing records of loyalty, noting that generations of Igbanke Enigie have paid homage to the Oba.
“The Enigie that have lived in Igbanke have all been loyal. They played their traditional chieftaincy roles to the Oba of Benin, just like others across the kingdom,” the statement read.
Benin Traditional Council Urges Peace in Igbanke Community
The BTC warned that the false identity claims could threaten peace in Edo State. It called on security agencies to monitor the activities of groups promoting the Igbo identity narrative.
“The Benin Traditional Council urges security agencies and the public to take note. The Igbanke claims may cause a breach of peace if left unchecked,” the palace warned.
The chiefs urged the Igbanke people to remain peaceful and not allow “misguided elements” to cause division.
