The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, has announced a two-week fasting and prayer exercise ahead of the annual yam festival. The observance will take place from September 15 to September 28, 2025, as part of preparations for the cultural celebration. This fasting period is known as "The Ague Festival"
Significance of the Yam Festival in Benin Kingdom
According to the palace statement signed by Chief Efosa O. Igbinomwanhia, Private Secretary to the Oba, the yam festival, known as Emorho in Edo , is one of the most important traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
The Oba explained that fasting and prayer are necessary steps before the festival. They are intended to seek divine blessings for a fruitful harvest, protection from untimely death, and lasting peace across homes, Edo State, and the entire nation.
Fasting Guidelines
The palace directed that the fasting should run daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.. All Benin sons and daughters, whether in Nigeria or in the diaspora, are expected to participate. The Oba also extended the call to non-indigenes residing in Edo State, stressing that the prayers are for everyone.

The monarch prayed for peace, happiness, and unity for families and communities throughout the kingdom.
