Benin Palace Issues Clarification Over Reported Assault
The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has publicly distanced the Palace of the Oba of Benin from an incident involving Pedro Obaseki, stating that the action was neither approved nor sanctioned by the monarch.
In a public announcement dated 31 December 2025 and issued from the Oba Palace in Benin City, the council said reports suggesting that the treatment meted out to Obaseki had royal backing were incorrect.
The clarification came amid public discussion surrounding the circumstances in which Pedro Obaseki was allegedly manhandled.
Benin Traditional Council Appeals for Calm
The council used the announcement to urge young people across the kingdom to avoid taking matters into their own hands, regardless of the level of provocation.
Instead, it advised residents to rely on lawful channels and allow security agencies to investigate and address disputes.
Officials stressed that respect for the rule of law should guide public conduct and that citizens should refrain from actions capable of escalating tensions.
Warning Against Misinformation
The statement also highlighted growing concerns about the spread of unverified information online.
The Benin Traditional Council called on social media users to verify facts before sharing content, noting that inaccurate reports can worsen already sensitive situations.
The appeal reflects a broader challenge facing public institutions in Nigeria, where misinformation and unverified claims often spread rapidly across digital platforms during controversial events.
New Year Message From the Oba
The announcement concluded with a New Year goodwill message from Oba Ewuare II to residents of the Benin Kingdom and the wider public.
The monarch extended best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead.
