In an unprecedented gesture of royal mourning, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has postponed his upcoming fifth coronation anniversary.
The decision follows the recent passing and burial of Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, a prominent billionaire businessman and philanthropist.
Royal Honour for Captain Hosa
The Benin Traditional Council announced the postponement in a formal statement signed by its secretary, Frank Irabor. The week-long celebrations, originally scheduled to culminate on 20th October 2021, have been put on hold indefinitely.
According to the council, the Oba directed the postponement on festivities to honour the late industrialist. The palace described Okunbo as an "illustrious son of Edo State" who held a special place in the kingdom.
"His Royal Majesty has directed that all the events lined up to mark the fifth coronation anniversary celebration... should be postponed in honour of the late Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo," the palace statement read.
Behind the Decision: Who Was Captain Hosa?
Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, affectionately known as "Captain Hosa," was a trained commercial pilot who later built a vast business empire. His investments spanned petroleum, aviation, agriculture, and marine security.
Beyond his wealth, Okunbo was a critical pillar in Edo State's socio-political landscape. He frequently funded local development and community initiatives.
A Rare Traditional Tribute
In the ancient Kingdom of Benin, royal calendars are rarely altered for individuals outside the immediate royal family. The Oba's decision highlights Capt Hosa profound impact in the kingdom. The businessman passed away in London on 8th August 2021, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His multi-day funeral in Benin City drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, preceding this royal decree.
