Oba Ewuare II Orders Traditional Worshippers to Begin Spiritual Campaign Against Insecurity in Edo
Oba Ewuare II has directed traditional worshippers across Edo South Senatorial District to begin spiritual exercises against kidnappers, armed robbers and other violent criminals operating in Edo State.
The directive was issued on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, during an emergency meeting at the Oba's Palace in Benin City. The meeting brought together traditional worshippers, traditional doctors, priests, priestesses and other custodians of indigenous religious practices.
The emergency gathering followed an earlier announcement by the Benin Traditional Council, which summoned traditional worshippers to discuss the worsening security situation in Edo State.
Traditional Worshippers to Support Security Efforts
Speaking through Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the Akenuwa of Benin, the Oba said the spiritual exercise would complement the efforts of the Edo State Government and security agencies.
He described the initiative as a message inspired by the ancestors.
"The message is from the ancestors. Edo people at home and in the diaspora should hear this."
The monarch warned that criminals would not prevail in Edo State.
"The criminals should know that God Almighty and our ancestors will not allow their evil to prevail in Edo."
Traditional Worshippers Begin Spiritual Exercise
The Oba expressed concern over rising cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes.
He urged traditional worshippers to use every legitimate traditional means available to restore peace throughout the kingdom.
"Many things that are not supposed to be happening are happening in this state. We have to pray. Those who want to destroy the kingdom will not succeed."
He added that the palace had already undertaken several efforts behind the scenes to improve security.
"Use all that you have to send all the wicked ones away so that we can sleep with our eyes closed."
"We don't want kidnapping, armed robbery and other social vices in this state. We want peace."
July 2 Return Date Announced
Oba Ewuare II instructed the traditional worshippers to continue the spiritual exercise for the coming days.
He directed them to return to the palace on July 2, 2026, with their ritual materials.
According to the monarch, the gathering will conclude with traditional rites against kidnappers and other violent criminals.
"After 10 days, you all will return to the palace with all you have to place curses on those involved in these evil acts. We want to see change."
Continuation of the Palace's Security Initiative
The meeting marked the implementation of a security initiative first announced by the Benin Traditional Council on June 19, when the palace summoned Igiohen N' Ikpia and Igiohen N' Ikhuo traditional doctors within the Benin Kingdom to an emergency consultation on insecurity.
The council had stated that the meeting was convened under the authority of the Oba to explore "traditional and strategic means" that could complement government initiatives aimed at restoring peace, order and security across the kingdom.
The palace also scheduled a separate engagement with Okaighele (youth leaders) as part of broader consultations intended to mobilise grassroots institutions in support of community security.
