Traditional Doctors Summoned to Emergency Meeting
The Benin Traditional Council has announced an emergency meeting for traditional doctors across the Benin Kingdom following growing security concerns in Edo State and Nigeria.
The announcement, dated June 19, 2026, was issued on the authority of His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, CFR. It calls on all Igiohen N' Ikpia and Igiohen N' Ikhuo, who are recognized as traditional doctors within the Benin Kingdom, to attend the meeting.
The gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 12:00 noon at Ugha Ozolua, Oba Palace, Benin City.
According to the palace announcement, the meeting forms part of efforts to address the prevailing security situation affecting Edo State and the country.
The notice says the Oba considers it necessary to explore traditional approaches that can complement government initiatives aimed at restoring peace, order and public safety.
According to the announcement, "His Royal Majesty... has deemed it necessary and expedient to further explore all traditional and strategic means to complement the initiatives of Government towards the restoration of peace, order, and security in our domain."
Attendance Made Mandatory
The Benin Traditional Council directed all invited traditional doctors to attend the meeting in person.
The announcement states, "All Igiohen N' Ikpia and Igiohen N' Ikhuo are hereby directed to attend in person."
It further adds that "This notice should be treated with the utmost urgency and compliance is mandatory."
The public announcement was signed by Chief Asiriuwa Victor Nosakhare (Obarisiuwa N'Iweguae) on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
Security Initiative
The emergency meeting highlights the Benin Traditional Council's continued role in supporting efforts to improve security within the kingdom.
The palace said the initiative is intended to complement existing government measures through traditional institutions and community-based approaches.
